Like Dragonflies

by K Webster & Danielle James Publication Date: March 7, 2019 Genres: Forbidden Romance

Purchase: Eden Books

I’m the good girl from Ashton Hills. Rich. Pampered. Spoiled. Slowly suffocating under my mother’s stifling thumb. He’s the bad boy from Duncan. Poor. Abused. Criminal. Being swallowed by the darkness each passing second. Two lost souls searching for freedom and happiness. We’re lonely—broken—and trapped. Until the universe brings us together. Sometimes love is instantaneous. A supernova collision of emotions. Something that cannot be ignored. As our hearts tangle to the point they’ll never be able to part, the past comes creeping up like an evil villain. The mistakes of our parents become our consequences to face. We’re madly, deeply, foolishly in love. Soul mates who finally found each other. Two people who share the same father.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I went into this book thinking OK forbidden romance, open mind, as the blurb says the characters are going to be half siblings.... I can't wait to dive in. I love a book that challenges my perceptions of when love is right and when love is wrong. Well Like Dragonflies was not entirely what I was expecting, it didn't feel dirty, shrouded, wrong, it felt sweet and purposeful, it felt cohesive and whole. Like Dragonflies read like a lot of other YA novels out there but with the forbidden romance novel and that surprised me in a good way.

The main characters Mars and Sage are likeable characters, with different backgrounds, social standings and very different parents. Both hero and heroine have a love of art and use it as a form of emotional release and expression, both feel an edge of loneliness and lack purpose in life. As soon as Sage and Mars meet, there is a levity and instant connection between them and I wanted to root for them straight away.

The novel is written and structured well, with the focus remaining on the main characters, how their connection and feelings grow for one another before the bombshell drops that rocks their world. I loved how we went through the range of emotions both Sage and Mars felt, how this evolved over time and how it spread beyond just the two of them.

It was refreshing to read a forbidden romance novel of this troupe that wasn't draped in darkness, sheltered, hidden etc. Like Dragonflies had a light about it that made it easier to see things with an open mind, and enjoy the story for what it is. One of love, fulfilment and finding your person despite the odds.
