Excerpt:
“I’m sorry,” she said, wiggling to disengage from his arms, the rose losing petals as she pushed against his chest. She perched on the tip of his knee, her back ramrod straight, facing away from him, staring out at the black Pamlico. “It won’t work.”“The date?” he bit out. “Or . . . us?”
She shrugged miserably as a trickle of blood ran down the length of her thumb.
“You’re bleedin’,” said Erik, putting his hands on her waist and swiveling her effortlessly to face him again. His expression was stony, his voice hurt. He reached for her hand and gently unfurled her fingers. Taking the rose from her grip, he threw it to the ground beside them, then lifted her palm to his mouth, sealing his lips over the puncture and sucking.
His tongue swirled around the small hole as he tenderly tried to kiss away her pain, to no avail. Finally he looked up at her, his thumb sealing the small puncture as he searched her eyes and spoke gently.
“Darlin’, I come here every night to be near you. I live for sunset like a vampire because that’s when my heart starts beatin’ each day, when I grab the keys to the car or boat and race over here to be with you. It makes me crazy all day to be away from you because I want more. I want to talk for hours and kiss you and find out what makes you laugh and . . . Damn it, Laire, this isn’t enough.”
A moment of panic swept through her, and she wondered, for a heart-stopping moment, if he was about to tell her that he wouldn’t be coming by anymore. And in that moment, she knew that, no matter how much it scared her to imagine her family finding out that she was seeing Erik Rexford, she would risk it. She couldn’t lose him. She wouldn’t let that happen, and if it meant she had to bend, had to take a chance that frightened her, she’d take it.
Their stolen moments every evening weren’t enough for her either. She wanted more time just as much as he did. Our own rules. They could figure this out together, right?
Before she lost her nerve, she leaned into him, pressing her aching breasts against his chest and reaching up to caress his cheek. “I could meet you Sunday after work. I’m only working the brunch shift, from seven to one. I’ll be free for the rest of the day, and my father won’t expect me back until eleven.”
“I have a car,” he said, his eyes lighting up with happiness, and her heart clutched, then sang, with the knowledge that her words, her actions, had made him smile like that. “I’ll drive you wherever you want to go.”
“I’ll have to move the boat to Hatteras Landing,” she said, her mind racing, trying to figure out the best way to cover their tracks. “I can’t leave it here all day.”
“I’ll arrange for a slip and pay for it,” he offered.
She raised her chin. “No, you will not.”
“Laire, I asked you on a date. I intend to pay.”
“Date starts when you pick me up at the marina at one thirty.”
“You drive a hard bargain, darlin’,” he said, leaning down to kiss her. “But I’ll take what I can get.”
“Okay, then,” she sighed, her eyes flitting hungrily to his lips.
“Thank God,” he murmured.
She wound her arms around his neck and let him pull her flush against his body, melting into a hot kiss and reveling in the feeling of his chest pushing into hers with every ragged breath he took. Her nipples beaded as though at his command, and she arched her back to get as close to him as possible. Plunging her fingers back into his thick dark hair, she moaned as he sucked on her tongue before changing the angle of their heads and resealing his lips over hers.
Her stomach filled with flutters as his hands moved down her back, his palms landing on her ass and squeezing gently as his tongue slid slowly against hers before he nipped her top lip between his. She was breathless when she suddenly realized his lips weren’t moving on hers anymore.
Opening her eyes slowly, she blinked up at his smiling face, feeling hot and bothered and needy.
“More,” she murmured, nuzzling his nose with hers.
“Open your eyes, Freckles,” he said, his breath ragged against her skin. She did, and his eyes, dark and wide, met hers. “Don’t tell me this won’t work. Don’t ever say that to me again.”
Her breath caught, but she nodded. “I won’t.”
His eyes fluttered closed, and he reached up to cup her cheeks. “Our rules, Laire.”
She rested her forehead against his. “Our rules, Erik.”
“Our rules,” he whispered again, then smiled, laughing softly with happiness, and she smiled with him, vibrating with wonder, leaning forward to press her lips to his and seal their promise.

This story has been on my TBR list for a while now and just
as long on my kindle. With the suggestion of joining the read-a-long I got my
ass in gear. And now I want to slap my hand for how long it took me to pick
this up and read it. Katy Regnery wrote this beautifully heartwarming story
that left a lasting spot in my heart and soul. If I could give this more than 5
stars I would.
Based loosely on Beauty and Beast I was pulled into this
modern day love story. The references were small but you could feel like you
were in the middle of this enchanting story.
Katy pulled on the heartstrings making me laugh, cry and fan myself all
while falling in love with this unlikely perfect match.
Asher and Savannah came back to their home town to lick
their wounds; one an injured war hero, the other a scorned journalist. When all
hope seemed gone this unlikely pair found each other and brought the other back
to life.
This is one of those books that you want to savor but need
to turn the pages faster because it’s that good. I cannot say it enough that I
loved this story and this is a must, MUST read!

Synopsis

Wylde looked in Jacob’s pained eyes and answered in his deep voice. “Yeah, counselor. I got it.”
From high school, up until he became a successful attorney Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. “Everyone left,” were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancé, all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six foot one, military-made body didn’t scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did. At almost forty, Jacob’s social life was non-existent, but he told himself his work fulfilled him. He helped people get out of their loveless marriages. Jacob Snowden was one of the best divorce lawyers on the east coast and was damn proud of it. So, imagine his disdain when a wedding planner moves into the suite directly adjacent to his… an insanely masculine, male wedding planner.
Wylde Sterling had made quite a name for himself in his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia, working for a wedding planner that catered to the elite. He was known for his charm and impeccable taste. Yep, he was incredible at giving couples the wedding of their dreams. But he wanted nothing more than to plan his own. After striking out in love more times than he cared to admit, Wylde decided to start his own business in a new city, hoping Richmond would give him a fresh start. Things started out wonderfully – until he started to piss off the angry divorce attorney next door.
Wylde could see past Jacob’s mean scowl, knowing there was a reason for it. It was the man’s defense mechanism, his means of keeping people away. Everything in Wylde told him to stay away, but he believed Jacob just needed to meet a man who had been hurt as badly as he had.
This story ends in an HEA and does not end on a cliffhanger.

When Jacob looked up at him, he noticed several expressions play over that ruggedly handsome face before finally stopping at apologetic. Jacob didn’t speak and neither did he. Wylde just nodded his head and continued inside. He wasn’t going to taunt or tease Jacob about that night, it wasn’t his style, but he had unfinished business with the man. He didn’t know exactly how Jacob felt about him as a tenant in this building anymore, but he was here and he’d demand respect. What happened a couple weeks ago wasn’t going to fly because when Jacob burst in his office, destroying his property in his wake, the man hadn’t been drunk yet. Just angry and hurt.
Wylde walked directly up to Jacob’s chair and bent down until their faces were level. He pulled out the business card that Jacob had shoved into his customer’s hand and tossed it in his lap. Wylde’s voice was deep and full of authority when he spoke; making sure Jacob got the importance of his message. “That better never happen again. You may not like my business, I may not like yours, but you will damn sure show me the same fucking respect that I show you. Are we clear, counselor?”
Jacob’s jaw tightened and ticked under Wylde’s serious glare, but he didn’t move until Jacob acknowledged what he’d said. He waited until Jacob finally nodded once, looking back to his game.
Wylde stood, ready to leave. He looked down at the board, the game well into its final stage. It might seem crazy but every real chess player has played his or herself. The board however, was a real beauty – mother of pearl if he was correct – and Wylde had the urge to sit and play with him but he didn’t feel welcome… at least, not yet.
“Do you play?” Jacob eventually spoke, his voice a raspy croak like he hadn’t said a word all day.
Wylde looked at him. “I do.”
“You any good?” Jacob’s look was inquisitive, his smirk arrogant when he spun the board putting the white pieces in front of Wylde.
Seriously. A test. The game was over and Jacob had to know it, but he obviously wanted to see if Wylde knew it too. It wasn’t an easy move to spot. He looked down at the board another few seconds. He let his long fingers caress the bishop as he stared into Jacob’s inky black eyes. Then he slowly moved the slender piece diagonally across five spaces, past the white knight and tipped Jacob’s lone black king, taking the white space.
“Checkmate,” Wylde whispered and left Jacob’s office.
The m/m genre is still fairly new to me. I’m very picky on
which authors I will read. I asked in a reader group and was told yes you need to read her stuff, yes you will
love her books and they were absolutely true about A.E. Via.
I love a good book that has a slow progression of feelings
with romance and not a wham bam thank you ma’am. The characters had back
stories, they were developed and there was a slow build up. There was romance,
angst and lots of hotness.
Jacob Snowden seems to be the devil incarnate to others but
to Wylde Sterling he’s so much more than what’s on the surface. He sees the
walls that Jacob has constructed around his heart is willing to break down
those walls and show him love.
A.E. Via hit the mark on this one. It was filled with everything
a good romance should be. I look forward to more from this author.
